The Music of Ill C (Seventy-two Hours to Insanity)
by J. Wasserman

I am writing this review drunk. It's not so much a review as a stream-of-consciousness thing done while listening to the two CDs sent to me by the illustrious and mysterious Ill C, Whorgasbord's upstate New York pal and all-around friend to mankind. He makes music by himself, improvising track over track in his home studio with countless instruments, and the results are beautiful in the way that broken things are beautiful.

This is not music that will ever be popular. It's not even music you can get, unless you emailed Mr. C and cajoled him into burning some for you. It is, however, music I would play if I had a bar. Or friends to invite to a party. It's free but not earsplitting, and it conveys a lot of emotion.

Did I mention I was drunk?

The third track on the unlabeled CD, in particular, is a real winner. There's this sort of jazzy drum groove going on, and a compelling bassline, and then this highly overdriven guitar comes in and makes the whole thing change. It's like a one-man Medeski Martin & Wood minus the hippies. It's like a really good one-man band.

It's 1 AM and I want to go knock on my friend's door and make him listen to this, but he's asleep and probably wouldn't appreciate me waking him to hear this music, even though it's great. And not "great" in that positive-review-of-a-friend's-album great, it's genuinely excellent music. There is definite skill in this, both compositionally and in terms of "chops." I keep turning the stereo up, but I'm afraid the deep bass might blow my speakers, so I ought to be careful.

I'm going to go to sleep now, but I will keep the CDs playing while I drift off. I'd like to sum up by thanking Ill C for sending me his CDs and exposing me to his unique musical vision. It's messy and fantastic and I can't think of anything else to say about it.

L'chaim.
